RCA got to spend some time with pianist and guitarist Alex Marshall from The Cab on the AP Tour. We found out his weird habits and what it was like to work with Patrick Stump of Fall Out Boy fame.
Brianna: So, okay, we’re going to start cliché here. How did you guys get the name ‘The Cab’?
Marshall: Uhh, we got the name The Cab for lack of a better one. Just random, shoutin’ out words and that stuck and that’s what we went with.
Brianna: How did you handle touring while in high school?
Marshall: Uh, well we didn’t leave for tour until after graduation. Brianna: Oh really?
Marshall: Yeah, we finished up and then headed out. Brianna: But were you working on your record while in high school?
Marshall: Uh, we were. Brianna: How was that?
Marshall: Umm, doing it, going and trying out to get signed before our final exams and just writing right up until we graduated. It was, I mean we wrote before we got signed so it was just like a normal hobby than a job, you know? Brianna: Was it stressful at all?
Marshall: A little bit. More of like, in the moment, starstruck than stressful and anything else. Brianna: I know I’d be freaking out probably [laughs].
Marshall: Yeah [laughs].
Brianna: So, how was it working with Patrick Stump on your first single?
Marshall: Umm, it was…Patrick’s like a big influence for us, he’s very talented, so to work with your idol and a talented musician, it’s flattering.
Brianna: Uhh, so how have the member changes affected you?
Marshall: Well with the majority of our writing, it’s mostly me and Singer [Alex De Leon], we do most of our writing so as far as friendship goes, that was a little weird and a little hard because they’re good friends but other than that it’s not changed that much. We have new members that are touring with us right now and they’re great. Brianna: So do you still keep in contact with them?
Marshall: Uhh, I keep in contact with Ian [Crawford], not as much Cash [Colligan] though.
Brianna: So, you’ve been on quite a few tours with label mates Hey Monday, right?
Marshall: Yeah. Brianna: Okay. So, can you spill like any crazy tour moments between you guys?
Marshall: Umm, at fans, with Hey Monday, Jersey, they say we look alike. Brianna: Really?!
Marshall: Yeah, so they say. And we always get mixed up, like kids will come up and be like, “Hey, Marshall!” and he’s like yeah… Brianna: “That’s not me.” [In a manly tone and laughs].
Marshall: So we kind of just roll with it now and if somebody asks and…[gets distracted by passersby]. Uh, if they…what was the question? I completely blacked out, what was it? Brianna: Uh, do you have any crazy tour moments?
Marshall: Uh, okay yeah. So if anybody asks us and they get us mixed up, we just roll with it.
Brianna: Who are your biggest musical influences?
Marshall: Biggest musical influences. Umm, we listen to, as far as everybody in the band, we all have different backgrounds. You know, like, my dad had me listening to funk when I was younger so I got, I’m big on the funk side. Singer’s super Stevie Wonder, JT, on and on. Johnson [Alex Johnson] listens to Blink 182 to harder bands, so it’s kind of a hybrid, especially for everybody.
Brianna: Do you have weird quirks?
Marshall: Quirks? As far as? Brianna: Like any weird habits.
Marshall: Weird habits. I yawn a lot before I go on stage, it relaxes me, it’s really weird. Apolo Ohno, the ice skater, has got me into do it. So that’s what I do. Brianna: [laughs]
Marshall: Uh, I don’t know. Everybody is just a little bit weird, you have to be though. Oh yeah! I have, from playing piano, I have hand muscles, like, that stick out when I flex. Brianna: That is weird!
Marshall: Feel it, you can feel it. Brianna: [After feeling his very bizarre hand muscles] Ahh, that’s so weird!
Marshall: A little weird but I work them out [laughs].
Brianna: What bands would you love to tour with?
Marshall: [Without hesitation] JT! I’d tour with JT. I feel like we share, especially on the new CD, we share a lot of same interest and elements and I think it would make sense. Brianna: Well do it, you gotta make it happen!
Marshall: I’d love to.
[Laughter]
Brianna: What is your biggest onstage blunder?
Marshall: Blunder? Like? Brianna: Like the most embarrassing thing that’s happened to you.
Marshall: Oh. Most embarrassing thing…umm [pause] falling? Probably just falling on stage. Brianna: Do you fall a lot?
Marshall: No. Brianna: Okay [laughs].
Marshall: I think I’ve done it like once or twice but sometimes it happens, I mean these shoes are slippery, you know? Brianna: [laughs]
Marshall: Umm, Singer went, one time, he went through the stage. He fell through the stage. Brianna: Are you kidding me!
Marshall: So he stayed there the whole song. That was on our CD release day on Whisper War in Rhode Island. Brianna: Oh my god!
Marshall: So he ate it pretty tough and he just sat there the whole song ‘cause he was like stuck. Brianna: Oh my god [laughs]
Marshall: It was like a one way, he could only get in.
Brianna: What song is currently your guilty pleasure?
Marshall: Umm, guilty pleasure, we don’t really, we kinda just go with whatever. We don’t really have guilty pleasures. Umm, there’s a new Justin Bieber song and it’s uh… Brianna: [laughs]
Marshall: It’s a good song. “That Should Be Me”, I think it’s called and the song is really good and umm, it’s just really good, I like it. Brianna: Do you have Bieber fever?
Marshall: I have Bieber fever.
[Laughter]
Brianna: Okay, so I know you guys were on the Real World. So how was it working with Erika? Do you think she has what it takes to make it?
Marshall: I think that she’s very driven, uhh, very opinionated, very, she’s sweet, she’s very cool and she’s very driven and because of that I think that she could, you know, go to where she wants to be.
Brianna: Okay. Lastly, are you currently working on new stuff right now?
Marshall: We are. We’re about, I’d say, like 80-85% done. When we get home from this tour we’re gonna go finish and then we’re hoping to get out, uhh, late summer, early fall.
Brianna: Well, thank you.
Marshall: Yeah, no problem.
