Jessie: We're here with Keeping Secrets! Say hi!
Nathan: Hey!
Cody: Hey! Only 2/5ths though. Jessie: Only 2, Nathan and Cody. Alrighty, first question: Describe your band using one sentence.
Nathan: Band with the worst luck ever.
Cody: That's the negative aspect. Positive aspect would be the band with pretty good luck considering that we've lived in 3 states and been able to stay together for 4 years. Jessie: What states?
Cody: Idaho, California, and now the great state of Washington. Jessie: Which is the best state (Washington.) Ok good stuff, so "The Rescue" is out now right?
Cody: As of yesterday.
Nathan: As of 2 days ago.
Cody: Oh yeah... Thursday. Jessie: Nice, how was writing and recording this album different from your last CD?
Nathan: It's a mix of everything from the last 4 years really --
Technical difficulties
Jessie: What was the best show you've ever played?
Nathan: We had an Idaho Falls show, we had no idea what to expect from it. It was like our first legitimate 2-3 week tour. We showed up and we didn't expect any kids to be there because it's Idaho Falls. But it went off like crazy, one of the biggest shows we've played on a tour. People were just getting crazy. There was a guy that was flashing his genitals while we were on stage.
Cody: Yeah I don't know if I'd take that as a compliment but yeah...
Nathan: It was a huge and memorable show.
Cody: Yeah. A lot of the shows in Seattle have been really good in general.
Nathan: Definitely one of our first shows when we moved here, it was a Theme For Murders last show and we opened for them at Club Impact and it was our first show here and I was just amazed. I was walking on the crowd and everything. It was so much fun.
Jessie: That's awesome. What is your favorite part about being in a band? I've never asked that as generic as it sounds!
Nathan: Tour.
Jessie: Tour.
Cody: Tour!
Nathan: New faces, new cities, new places.
Cody: New experiences. You get to go out with your friends, play shows, whether it be 5 people or 300 people. It's not just tour or playing the shows, it's the whole thing.
Nathan: In between, the driving, what you see.
Cody: Driving, we camp at night in the summer, bonfires every night, truck stops, it's just awesome.
Nathan: You never know what to expect when you're on tour, that's the best part.
Cody: You never worry about financial things, once you hit the road it's all gone, it doesn't matter because you're just having a great time.
Jessie: Sounds like the life!
Cody: Pretty good life.
Jessie: What band did you enjoy playing with most?
Nathan: There's a lot of them. The local bands we play with are the best. It's just a bro-down on stage, everyone is coming up singing each others songs. That's a better experience in my opinion than playing with all these huge bands. Like we've played with A Day To Remember, Alesana, A Static Lullaby, From Autumn to Ashes. It's cool to say we shared the stage with them, but nothing beats the brother bands hanging out and raging. The last time we played here with Aspen, Ellis Armor, and Monsters Scare you... That was a great night because we're all friends and people are just hanging out and running on stage with each other. It's a better experience to me.
Cody: And it's a more relaxed show because you get into playing with bigger bands, we played Taste of Chaos with Bring Me the Horizon and Thursday... And when you play big shows like that as an opener band you don't get treated very well. Everyone is like "Ahh you can't put your stuff there, move your stuff!" We've never really had bad experiences with the bands, but the people that work the shows and stuff. Jessie: Like the staff of the venues and stuff?
Cody: Yeah
Nathan: Yeah like they don't care about smaller time bands. We had to battle just to get 2 feet of a table to put our T-Shirts and CDs on. I won't mention names of the bands merch guy but it was at Taste of Chaos and we set up merch and he's like "No you need to move it." So we set up merch again and this guy takes all of our stuff and throws it over to the side when we're not looking.
Cody: There isn't really a lot of respect for opening bands.
Nathan: Definitely not a lot of respect for small time bands. Especially when it's an opening band for a big tour like that. It's all about the brotherhood bands.
Jessie: Ah interesting... So what are your thoughts on the Seattle music scene today?
Cody: I think it's pretty good, it's probably being that we've lived in a few places.
Nathan: Most loyal fans.
Cody: Most loyal fans and they care about what you're doing, they support you, they'll come out and watch every show, even if you play 3 or 4 times a month in the same city, which is something we try not to do but we play them anyway. The scene here has been really great, definitely a lot different. Los Angeles was the exact oppostie. There isn't much care for the scene down there for anyone. People down there are on their own agenda, you can't even get your friends to come out to your show. They're always busy. You end up selling tickets and being on a contract with venues. Here it's presale some places, but it's like you sell as many as you can and that's all you can do. In a lot of places in Los Angeles you come in and sign a contract saying you're gonna sell 50 tickets and if you don't sell them, you have to pay us the money.
Jessie: Oh, lame!
Cody: Yeah so if they're like $10 a piece, you owe them $500 whether or not people come. That's kind of where it's gone to now and it's sad.
Nathan: Up here, people will actually drive to see us play. Whereas when we lived in California, nobody wants to travel to see a show. We have people from Mount Vernon and Yakima drove down tonight. The fans are loyal up here, they're willing to travel to see you. It's not as over-saturated as California was. There's not as many venues, not as many bands that have a name for themselves up here. I was very surprised that we were able to make a name for ourselves up here, without knowing anyone very well. But through the relationships that we made with local bands when we met them on tour last year, it was crazy. They're like hey these are our boys come check them out.
Cody: It's smaller than Los Angeles and bigger than Boise. It's on the map definitely. That's why we moved up here. Jessie: How long ago was that?
Cody: November, so almost a year.
Jessie: I think it's great up here... Last question! What is the main source of motivation for writing "The Rescue?"
Nathan: Everyday life. Without a doubt, everyday life.
Cody: Experiences and things that matter to us. Whether it be the cliche relationships or just life in general and our relationship with God. We just kind of tried to take and transform it to music.
Nathan: We definitely like to keep it positive. There are some sad lyrics, but I, myself, like to keep everything I write lyrically positive and uplifting. Even though we're in a genre where it's all like oh sad and depressed, I like to scream sort of thing. But if you look at our lyrics it's all about living life and enjoying yourself while doing it.
Jessie: Any last words?
Cody: Go pick up our album!
