Song Covers.... or something of that sort.

I really should title this blog: "The Top 10 Covers of all the music I enjoy... according to me." or something like that. Because, frankly, it's more of a list of my favorite covers rather than the opinions of the rest of the RCA staff... however, here I shall commence.

So, my knowledge of music is very minutia, thus my opinion about the top 10 song covers seems a bit counterintuitive, right? I mean, who cares what I, a 23 year old recent college graduate now teacher in lower New York state, has to say about music? Well, I hope…

The Mothership Tour ft. Skrillex & 12th Planet

Once again, it's that magical time of year when the dark prince of Brostep ascends onto a drooling, wide-eyed Seattle massive and assaults our senses with a new stage set that promises to be ever so worthy of the Mau5trap name. I'm a massive fan of Sonny Moore A.K.A. Skrillex and all his creative endeavors, but I can admit--if there was one place Sonny was lacking in the past, it was his live performance. Welp, be prepared to have all preconceived notions obliterated. For his Mothership Tour, Sonny has pulled out ALL the stops. His…

Hey - Bateson here. Here is a short blog on albums I've been jamming to lately.

blink-182 - Neighborhoods
Yeah, I've been listening to the leak. I don't feel too guilty about it since I pre-ordered. "Neighborhoods" is a great follow-up to self-titled. I saw the band live a few weeks back in Auburn, and the production was phenomenal. Long live Mark, Tom, and Travis.

Places and Numbers - Travels
Bobby Darling (guitarist of Gatsbys American Dream)'s solo work is quite impressive. Here is a cool video onYouTube of how he made "Travels" backpacking through…

Skullcandy Presents the 2011 IDentity Festival @ the Gorge, WA: No Shirt, No Shoes, Just Bass

Saying that Skullcandy's 2011 IDentity Festival stopped at the Gorge, would be like saying Woodstock was a delightfully well-planned, intimate experience for a handful of people in the 1960's. ID didn't just make its final nationwide stop in our very own backyard; IDentity Festival soaked the hillsides of the Gorge in 3 days of brain rattling bass, about 12 square yards of clothing, and a counter-cultural movement with a soundtrack from the likes of LA Riots, the Disco Biscuits, Le Castle Vania, Pretty Lights, DatsiK, Rusko, NERO, the…

If a tree falls in the woods and is awesome...

We all know (or should anyway) that this past saturday was Dimebag (but still DIAMOND to me) Darrell's Birthday, RIP, which consequently was also my son Halen's first birthday. Rightly so, he was named after another guitar great, because his daddy loves the shred. Over the first weekend off I've had in a while, I got to thinking about my previous posts regarding the tons of great artists in the great northwest that are just waiting to explode. Of course, because of my line of work and the genre that I often work with, I know a lot of the…

"...Truth is, most of you suck." Seattle Musicians: Are they taken seriously?

While scrolling through the various status updates on facebook early this afternoon, I came across one of a status of one of musician friend's exclaiming his annoyance of another "friend's" distaste for Seattle musicians. This status that angered my friend stated, although he loves his fellow Seattle musicians, he believes that "most of (them) suck." His opinion unravels as he bashes most, if not all, local musicians who don't live up to his "high" standards of what a quality musician is.

As I sat there, jaw open and eyebrows clinched, I could only watch comments pour in one after another…

Rebecca Black debuts a REAL boring, real but boring, "Moment"

Rebecca Black, music "industry's" favorite unfavorite 13 year-old internet sensation, has released a video to her new single called "My Moment." While the world cringes at the sound of her name, the video stands out as MAD boring (possibly even border line forgettable.)

In all honesty, I was expecting some other catastrophe like "Friday" brought back in April (can you believe it's been 2 months since that song invaded our airwaves?), but this video is simply a waste of 3 minutes and 26 seconds. I expected more from Miss Friday since she was brave enough to make…

9 new The Dear Hunter albums? Are you kidding me?!

There are very few things I hold higher than a nice snooze in the afternoon or cats on a rainbow, but some good ol' fashion rock 'n roll is definitely up there. My current obsession: The Dear Hunter's Color Spectrum EPs. Who else beside Casey Crescenzo would be crazy enough to undertake the enormous task of making a four-song EP for every color of the rainbow [by that I mean ROYGBIV, with black and white thrown in for good measure], and give each EP enough attention to make it good enough to stand alone with its…

Tuesday is my favorite day of the week

.. And why is Tuesday is my favorite day of the week? NEW. RELEASES. Yes, I am a day late but it's better late than never. I've been really behind on all of the new releases and now I'm determined to keep up. With that said, here are the notable releases for the week and a few short thoughts about it.

  • All Time Low - Dirty Work
Everything with this band is hit or miss for me. I loved Put Up Or Shut Up and So Wrong, It's Right was okay, but Nothing Personal left a bad taste in…

Mord Fustang: Electro House Man of Mystery

Its been about 4 months since the electro house enigma that is Mord Fustang first appeared on ze interwebz. Like a blind girl at a deaf orgy, the electro scene had no idea who was coming. He would spend the next few months filling our brain boxes with a sound Mr. Fustang himself describes as "Arpeggios, wobbles, 1-up mushrooms and disco basslines." Good on ya mate. His tracks would enjoy their time in the spotlight, spending several weeks with multiple songs appearing in Beatport's Top 10. In truth I've kind of been putting off writing this because...…

    A-Trak: You're a Legend Sir!

Whether you know it or not, odds are you've heard New York-based DJ/Producer A-Trak's work. He's ALL over the place. Whether he's spending his time on tour as Kanye West's live DJ, or in the studio bangin' out tunes with his house/EDM group Duck Sauce, A-Trak keeps it real. When it comes to raw, old school DJ appeal, it's hard to beat this guy.

He got his start at the tender age of 15... by winning DMC's DJ World Championship, becoming the youngest ever to win the award. Of course, he couldn't just stop there. Some of…

Adele - more than just a fad.

I've been a fan of Adele ever since I was working at this grocery store called Kings in 2008 (it's a chain in New Jersey.) I was a cashier and this girl came through my line buying milk and cereal, I think. She paused when she looked at my face as I mumbled for the hundredth time, "paper or plastic." The girl said, "You look like this new singer named Adele. Ever heard of her?"

Well, I had heard of her. Reading blogs and planning a trip to London caused me to do extensive research of what was popular in…

I'm back! With that said, read this.

RCA! I'm back from a semester of crippling 18-credit HELL! Seriously, whoever coined the phrase, "You can sleep when you die," has probably died. (If you find the body, I didn't do it.) After much loss of sleep, hours of dedication to homework, and many certification exams as I trek my way to becoming a certified teacher in the state of New York, I am back.

To celebrate my return, I wrote a tasty article about the lost art of the Mixed Tape. You should go read it for yourself. It's actually well researched and well thought out...…

WOLFGANG GARTNER @ The King Cat Theater

Wolfgang Gartner. You might recognize the name from a track likeAnimal Rights that he co-produced with Deadmau5. Maybe you've heard one his new smashes (ie. Illmerica, Space Junk, Wolfgang's 5th Symphony, etc.) on the interwebz somewhere. But then again, maybe you were one of the lucky rascals who got to experience Wolfgang live at the King Cat Theater on April 8th.

Upon arrival at what is becoming my new favorite venue in Seattle I was drunk with anticipation (and whiskey). I was greeted by the pulsating sounds of Felix Cartal,…

    CHRIS LAKE @ REPUBLIQ

Hailing from across the pond in his native UK, Chris Lake looked to make waves at his "Play Pause Record" tour stop in Seattle. Unfortunately, all we got was a healthy splash of his upbeat trademark house music and a monsoon of lights and lasers courtesy of Republiq Night Club in SODO.

With a raucous crew and the week's disposable income in hand, arriving at Republiq was a pleasantly surprising experience. Nestled in the heart of SODO, I was expecting the venue to be a bit on the grimey side. Other venues in this area have a tendency…

    UPDATED! Another Jonny Craig posting.

"Black Macbook for $800 OBO". Sound convincing? How about $650? Are you ready to make an offer? Go ahead and shoot Jonny Craig of Emarosa (Dance Gavin Dance before that) a tweet and he'll get back to you to where you should send the money.

When will you receive your new Macbook in the mail? Oh, you won't.

Apparently Jonny Craig has been tricking people into sending him a certain amount of money through MoneyGram, a service similar to Paypal, and hasn't sent any of the goods that he has promised to send.

MNIAKEL: An Introspective Look at the World of Dubstep

Ladies and gentlemen, girls and boys, scary monsters and nice sprites; Lend me your brains. Before I begin, I’d like to offer you a few truths that I hold in life. This way, when you read my “writing,” you’ll understand the blurred vision, striking headaches, and desire to spontaneously combust that have been known to follow. There’s not a lot I can say about my writing that I can’t also say about the music I listen to. It’s dry, chaotic, often misleading… It is dubstep. To aid in the healing process, I’ll be providing you with vitamins…

    Lady Gaga Flop?

It seems like the master artist of reinvention is having trouble reinventing herself. Yesterday, February 10, 2011, Lady Gaga released her single "Born This Way" to all the major radio stations in the United States. A few hours later, the song was released digitally for all of the world to hear. Fans have been anticipating the release since Gaga's twitter exploded with lyrics from the upcoming single at the stroke of midnight on January 1, 2011. For days now, Gaga supporters have been reacting on their twitter pages about their excitement as they await the release of the masterpiece the…

The oldest rant in the book: The state of music today (and why it sucks).

After spending the last three days of my life revisiting the Thrice discography right up to (slash through one time to see if it made the cut.. but didn't) Vheissu, I have come to the conclusion that there is no way in hell music is never going to be this aurally pleasing ever again.

    Jonny Craig is a joke...

Last year, around this time, I was diving into old Dance Gavin Dance records and becoming familiar with the train wreck known as Jonny Craig. Well, who would have guessed that my disgust and mortification for this "bro" would outshine that of Nevershoutnever and All Time Low.

Last week, I stumbled upon Jonny and his bragged 9-incher on my tumblr dashboard. While gagging, I knew I had to investigate. We all know Mr. Craig as being the frontman of both Emarosa and DGD. His reputation has also lead bystanders to believe this party-animal is just like every other doped up,…

My Thoughts on Zac and Josh's "Sudden" Leave from Paramore.

It seems that Paramore fans are just waiting for the other shoe to drop. On Saturday, December 18, 2010, everyone's favorite female fronted band since No Doubt announced that two of their founding members, Josh and Zac Farro, have permanently left the band.

The three remaining members, Hayley Williams, Taylor York, and Jeremy Davis, wrote a joint statement on Paramore.net saying of Josh and Zac: "A couple of months ago, Josh and Zac let us know they would be leaving the band after our show in Orlando last Sunday. None of us were really shocked. For…

Lions, Tigers, and Zombie Cougars... oh my?

Halloween is approaching, whether we like it or not! It's one of my favorite holidays, because I love to dress up. In years past, I've dressed up like Lady Gaga and Kevin Federline. (Yes, all these photos can be found on my facebook.) As I was scoping out twitter this afternoone between neglecting my unfinished homework (Senior year is simply killing me) and nap time, I saw in the trend's section the words "Zombie Cougars".

(Remember that song that played at all our proms that, when played, suddenly made every uber white kid suddenly gangster?)

Eminem > everyone else. Especially Miley Cyrus. Warning: Rant ahead.

On Tuesday we learned that Eminem literally obliterated the competition with the release of his album Recovery, with 753,870 copies sold in the first week. Degrassi star, Drake, pushed 156,451 copies of his release, and poor little skankface Miley Cyrus only enticed 106,553 people to buy Can't Be Tamed. Boo hoo.

This just goes to show that horribly revealing leotards and $24,000 dollar hair extensions don't do much in terms of promoting album sales. In fact, Miley's edgy look is hurting her image and her career (don't even get me started on her reputation). At…

According to her Twitter page, Williams was hacked, and the fact that Paramore's default last.fm picture and heading were changed to match the--er--theme of the night makes for a pretty convincing story.

I could really use a wish right now...

So, this might be "old" news to those who like to keep it current, but last week I heard "Airplanes" by B.O.B. featuring Eminem and Hayley Williams. Here are three reasons why this song is FREAKING epic.

    1. B.O.B. has some flowing lyrics (Eminem too!)

    2. It will catch your attention... and stick to you.

    3. Hayley hasn't done anything like this... expanding career? CHEAHHH!!!

I usually don't openly support illegal downloading, but I think the time has come for me to say that anyone who tells you to purchase everything that you listen to is either a) a hypocrite, or b) 70 years old. I've been downloading music since the era of Napster, when it would take 3 hours to download one song on my crappy 28.8K connection. Ok, so I am a sucker for corny videos with a heart felt message, but no one does cheesy videos like The Spill Canvas. They are one of those bands I personally have put in a category of cliche, but I guess I am a fan of the cliche. Maybe that's the point... I DON'T KNOW!

Paramore is [the Hayley Williams] band!

On February 17, 2009, Paramore released their video for "The Only Exception". Initially, I was quiet excited because it was supposed to be unlike any Paramore video. The first legit video I saw from them was for "Misery Business". The fire-haired, feisty Hayley commanded a video with such power, setting the stage for the Hayley Williams show. Since then, we've seen Hayley explode all over the mainstream radio. Scene kids all around started dying their hair with Hot Topic hair dyes, buying yellow or red skinny jeans, and wearing vans like no tomorrow. Hayley Williams not only has become a…

    And the Grammy Goes To...

First off, can I say how much I do not like Green Day? Does anyone else agree with me?!

I'm disappointed by the Grammy's, for this is the AWARD show, the face of "music". I really don't care about people who can't sing, dance, or move a crowd. But seriously, since when did cencoring Eminem become such a unknown concept? When did the great Stevie Nicks become Taylor Swift's backup singer? Why is Travis Barker playing drums for Drake & Lil Wayne? Who is T. Pain really? Lady Gaga + Elton John? WHAT IS THIS MADNESS!!!

    Well, anyways, tonight I…

Where is my iDad and iMom?!

The real question is where is my iPad?!

If you haven't heard about it, it's the hot new thing... the hottest trending twitter topic (this is an assumption, no solid evidence, too lazy to open new tab to check) and the hottest trending product. You know those mini laptops? Little netbook thingy majiggers? Well the iPad is the same idea; from Apple. They released it today and you can check it out now on Apple.com.

    Epic.

    Monday Morning News

    Today in the News:

... Pete Wentz, the most credible musician in the whole planet (hint to sarcasm), told MTV this weekend that Craig Owens, ex-frontman from Chiodos, is the best artist of 2010. I think it's alright to laugh at Pete Wentz once again.

... During an interview with Jeremiah Edmond, the drummer from Manchester Orchestra, has decided to leave the band under a few conditions, including feeling burnt out from being on the road. All in a days work, right? That's kinda what the job entails. Best of luck to him.

    ... Fred Mascherino (Taking Back Sunday/The Color…

Mini-reviews vol. 1: Broadway Calls, Kid Cudi, and Taking Back Sunday

This is a compromise. I have a lot of opinions, and have a hard time trying to decide what to write about. And when I do write something, it's horribly long winded and you just want to scream FOR THE LOVE OF GOD STOP WRITING I GET IT ALREADY at me (which you can do at aeryn@raincityambience.com or you can send me nice things. Or questions. Or just... whatever). So in the interest of getting something done and not boring you to death... I bring you mini-reviews. Sometimes they'll be sorta vague (sorry), and sometimes I'll still tell you too…

Heed my advice: don't beat up the beat!

jersey shore cast Pictures, Images and Photos

Throw together absurd fist pumping, eight over-tanned, over-gelled Italians, and a few cameras and you have MTV’s latest poor excuse of a reality show, Jersey Shore.

As a young adult I have found myself easily thrusted into the consumption of what can arguably be considered reality television. I admit to finding entertainment in discovering whether the 16-year-old’s baby daddy is finally going to get off of his lazy ass or which performer will ultimately be unveiled at the “BEST PARTY EVER!” Although I often indulge in these idiotic…

    Heavy & Light

On November 24, 2007, Casey Calvert of Hawthorne Heights was found dead in their tour bus after a show with Escape the Fate, Amber Pacific, and others. This death in the emo music world was shaken and the organization To Write Love On Her Arms started an event called Heavy & Light to raise money for Calvert's family. The event was such a success, TWLOHA started making it an annual thing.

Well, Heavy & Light has been held for 3 years now and the list of performing acts keeps getting bigger and better. This year, along with my musical…

    DON'T F*#& WITH 4CHAN

    This is absolutely ridiculous...ly awesome?

You would think that YouTube learned after their first porn attack not to mess with these guys ("these guys" being anon from 4chan's /b/ discussion board), but clearly I am in the wrong. Granted, YouTube probably didn't realize what they were getting themselves into when they closed LukeyWes1234's account yesterday afternoon after the boy went from 10 to 15,000 subscribers in a matter of hours. YouTube probably thought it was a hoax.

Apparently, 4chan just likes young boys (uhhh).

There are a couple of videos of LukeyWes1234 in…

    Start of the Year Round-Up

Rather than doing a list of top albums, bands, songs, etc. for the end of the year, I'm flipping it around kind of. There isn't much to choose from, so it's not much of a top favorite list as it is a what's new list.

    What's new in 2010:

    1) Man Without Wax (New Song) - I.Don't.Care
    2) This is Hell (New Video) - The Search
    3) The Dear and Departed (New Album) - Chapters
    4) Katy Perry (News) is engaged!
    5) Number One Gun (New Song) - The Victory

    Xmas-core!

Tis the season for pop-punk/hardcore/rock bands to produce what i like to call... xmas-core. After having surgery during my finals week, I was pandora-ing listening to some "interesting" covers of all our favorite Christmas classics. This season, you won't have to settle for cookie-cutter Christmas tunes. Settle yourself in for a wild ride. We all have our favorite "punk goes christmas" collection. I'll be making my list AND checking it twice.

So, as i compiling this Xmas-core list, tell us:
What is your favorite Christmas song cover?

As you ponder, check out these albums for ideas!

    musicals are like....

So, while I've been researching Pandora, Last.fm, and other internet radios, I searched "soundtracks" to see what kind of music would come up. WOW. Some musicals have really great soundtracks. I mean, movies do too (Juno & Lord of the Rings for example), but when was the last time you saw a musical & something spurred you deep inside to find that music, BUY it, and enjoy it?

I love musicals. I used to do musicals. My favorite role was playing the Scarecrow in The Wizard of Oz. As i was thinking about music & musicals & soundtracks, i thought…

    Last.fm vs. Pandora

Personally, I've only actively used Last.fm. I found this website on my own and it's grown from there. Basically, you download Last.fm player to your hard drive, it takes all your music (and it's plays) on your computer, loads it into this database, complies the data, and stores it. It then creates a radio station to what you already have on your computer. You can then tune into other radio stations related to artist or genres. If you're not on your main computer, you can go on your Last.fm site and listen to YOUR RADIO STATION that automatically loads.

    Plus,…

The Almost new Video... TELL ME YOUR THOUGHTS!

The Almost has officially released their video for their new single "Lonely Wheel". As you know, Aaron Gillespie is my musical husband, so he's pretty darn sexy in this. I think you should take a look-see.

The song is all about how we have this life we don't want to live and we need change. I think this is a pretty big topic, religious or not, to talk about with The Almost sort of fans. Not that the fans are all emo kids wanting to jump off the nearest bridge or drown in the nearest lake, but…

    midterms can eat scum...

As I sit here in my condemned hole-of-a-room, nuzzled in my nest/bed full of warmth, I was rudely reminded this morning that midterms are upon me yet again. You may ask, "Colleen, such a studious scholar such as yourself should have no problem passing your English Education classes. You love English." Yes, I love English. All three of my English courses in my 17 credit schedule are my favorite. Not to mention, I have some of the best professors at my college. BUT, as I think about my major of Adolescent Education (w/ concentration of English & Writing), I wonder...…

It's all over. I'm comin' home.

After 2 years of school down in Florida and 2 diplomas later, this time and chapter in my life has come to an end. A lot has changed since I left, some for the good and some for the bad but one thing that I have always looked forward to is coming home. It is time to start a new chapter back in Seattle and even pick up where I left on in some respects. Thanks for something or thanks for nothing. See you all in a few weeks.

Well, T-Mobile, you've really outdone yourselves this time.

I thought I would wait at least a week to blog about this, in case a miracle happened and everything went back to normal. It has not. And so I blog.

It has been almost two weeks since the great Danger/Microsoft server crash, and there is really no hope for recovery. Danger hired Hitachi to come in and upgrade the main server that Sidekick user data was stored on (contacts, calendar entries, notes, ANYTHING stored on the device is actually stored on this remote server), and the upgrade failed. Now we are all screwed. I am not going to go…

Sorry for the lack of updates. Too much work and too little play. Ryan Kam is just about done with my video for Hunters "Lover At Best." And it's looking sick so far! Postal people HATE Paramore

THIS JUST IN.... the Postal Service of AMERICA hates Paramore!

Ok, I'm pretty sure I JUST LIED, but I'd like to inform the WORLD (you) that I JUST RECEIVED my copy of Paramore's new album Brand New Eyes today in the mail. When did I order it? September 17, 2009. I was so close to calling the Fueled By Ramen HC to find out where my beloved package went to. My little package went all the way to Albany, NY!!!! Sure, I'm only 20 minutes outside of New York City these days... and Albany isn't TOO FAR OFF... but WHAT…

    NeverShoutNever new video!

I've always liked NeverShoutNever (name is an alias for Christofer Ingle). It's not just his cute face, acoustic style, and attractive red hair. He's got talent. That's it. Watch his new video and tell US what you think. It's not like a regular booty-poppin, name droppin', artsy silly pants video... it's a video that entertains & makes you think.

    REST IN PEACE already, MJ!

As a music fan (maybe that's an understatement...), I was sad like everyone else in the world when I found out that Michael Jackson had passed away. His death consumed our television screens, littered the topic of most bulletins on myspace & facebook, and occupied a space on the most discussed word(s) on twitter. His death was a shock and he will be missed. Today is July 27, 2009, and he's still being discussed... It's been over 4 weeks since the King of Pop passed away, and yet, has he had an opportunity to ACTUALLY rest in peace?

    This…
