End-of-the-year list ROUNDUP.
Everyone loves
End-of-the-Year lists, right? They appear everywhere at the end of the every year, and it's always exciting to listen to peoples' top picks that you have never heard before.
Music lists:
PureVolume's Top 20 Unsigned Bands of 2009. Tacoma's
He is We was the number one pick. Why am I not surprised? I can honestly say that I haven't heard of any of the other bands, so I think I have some research to do.
AbsolutePunk's Top 30 Albums of the Year. A couple of surprises, but nothing to pee your pants over.

Tyler's Tasty Top 10
Considering this is going to be my first blog entry, I guess it's only fitting that you get a judgment of my musical tastes via my 2009 top album list. As I was thinking about the music I've been listening to all year, I looked at my iTunes to see what dominated my plays and sadly it wasn't very much music from albums released in 2009. But here goes nothing, and I hope to get more involved in RCA as its San Diego representative ha. Bask in it.

Colleen's Top 10 Albums of 2009.... and then some.
After reading both
Kelly &
Garrett's picks for 2009, I whispered aloud,
"Crap, my choices aren't NEARLY as artistic as theirs." As I sat there, in my nest of a bed resting off whatever flu like symptoms I have now thanks to a confined space with my family members, I realized that this list is what fancies
MY taste. My taste may not be the most artistic or highest rating with the critics, but this is what I liked in 2009. Hopefully, my list is a little diverse.
So, instead of being just like Kelly and…

Kelly's top ten albums of 2009
After finals, contracting the flu, contracting some other undesirable ailment, and an insane holiday season in the retail world, jumping on the ol' computer takes a bit of effort. With two days until the end of the 2009, I realized that this blog is an opportunity I can't pass up.
Without further ado, I present you with...
Kelly's top ten albums of the year!
I have put quite a bit of thought into this list at work and while driving to and from work (what a life I lead!), so I think I have just about enough foundation to write…

Guilty pleasures; a few reasons to question my existence.
Sometimes I wish I could post blogs and articles anonymously, because the things I post are mostly self-incriminating and probably make people wish someone would take away my ability to post things on public domains. Seeing as this is not possible, all embarrassing blogs posted on raincityambience.com will probably be from yours truly. And maybe Colleen once in a while (cough, CafeWorld, cough).
And so it begins:
Lady Gaga. There's really nothing that amps me up quite like lyrics that make absolutely no sense. "Rah rah ah ah ah roma ro ma ma gaga ooh la la," opens Lady Gaga's…

Cooking as a way of life; a testimony of therapeutic cooking
During this economically challenging holiday season, there's nothing more calming then a turkey simmering, friends all around, and chesnuts roasting on an open fire. Well, there's no chestnuts here, but there is turkey. Lots of it.
Kelly

I, Colleen E. Gilfoy, play CafeWorld. I have been certainly quick to make fun of these... virtual world players, especially FarmVille. Well, I am now a believer. I believe in the power of CafeWorld.

Xmas-core!
Tis the season for pop-punk/hardcore/rock bands to produce what i like to call... xmas-core. After having surgery during my finals week, I was pandora-ing listening to some "interesting" covers of all our favorite Christmas classics. This season, you won't have to settle for cookie-cutter Christmas tunes. Settle yourself in for a wild ride. We all have our favorite "punk goes christmas" collection. I'll be making my list AND checking it twice.
So, as i compiling this Xmas-core list, tell us:
What is your favorite Christmas song cover?
As you ponder, check out these albums for ideas!

So, while I've been researching Pandora, Last.fm, and other internet radios, I searched "soundtracks" to see what kind of music would come up. WOW. Some musicals have really great soundtracks. I love musicals. I used to do musicals. My favorite role was playing the Scarecrow in The Wizard of Oz. As i was thinking about music & musicals & soundtracks, i thought…

Last.fm vs. Pandora
Personally, I've only actively used Last.fm. I found this website on my own and it's grown from there. Basically, you download Last.fm player to your hard drive, it takes all your music (and it's plays) on your computer, loads it into this database, complies the data, and stores it. It then creates a radio station to what you already have on your computer. You can then tune into other radio stations related to artist or genres. If you're not on your main computer, you can go on your Last.fm site and listen to YOUR RADIO STATION that automatically loads.
Plus,…
This is grounds for retirement.
Every time I tell somebody I haven't actually listened to the newest Brand New album yet (which happens to only be twice, but both times were in the past two days), I get the feeling that they think I should probably just quit life and pursue something not related to music.
Long story short, I JUST GOT THE ALBUM, OKAY? I AM LISTENING TO IT RIGHT NOW. And holy crap, I pretty much refuse to believe that this is Brand New. The opening track, Vices reminds me more of Refused than the Brand New that I know and love.
The…

Usually when a new album comes out from a band I am generally "meh" about or have never heard before, I wait awhile until I am in the mood to listen to new music. The Almost new Video... TELL ME YOUR THOUGHTS!
The Almost has officially released their video for their new single "Lonely Wheel". As you know, Aaron Gillespie is my musical husband, so he's pretty darn sexy in this. I think you should take a look-see.
The song is all about how we have this life we don't want to live and we need change. I think this is a pretty big topic, religious or not, to talk about with
The Almost sort of fans. Not that the fans are all emo kids wanting to jump off the nearest bridge or drown in the nearest lake, but…

The first in a series of three blogs, here's an in depth look at my entire setup.
I literally spent hours and hours in high school studying articles like this, and dreaming up the rig I would want to have if I could travel the country playing music. Here was the drill: The only supplies needed for this fantastical game are a Musicians Friend magazine, a calculator, and a steno pad. Simply list the gear you want and add up the prices; back in the hay day it was something like a Mesa Boogie Triple Rectifier, a Les Paul Custom…

The past week has been a confusing one for me, the unfortunate Zumiez employee, who opens freight boxes hoping not to be surprised with a shipment of Ed Hardy or Affliction (Sidenote: This has yet to happen at my store, but I hear Alderwood Mall is a different story). Ok, I'm pretty sure I JUST LIED, but I'd like to inform the WORLD (you) that I JUST RECEIVED my copy of Paramore's new album Brand New Eyes today in the mail. When did I order it? September 17, 2009. After the 24 hour trek from Seattle to Denver, a very large portion of Penang curry and chicken, and a couple 50 cent New Belgium 1554 Dark Ales, the band and I went down to the lobby to hang with our new label mates, The Swellers.
Having heard their music, I was expecting to meet some dudes that were about as relatable to us as their music is. This is not a bad thing, but they play punk music (and good punk music, at that). This Providence does not.
Nick, Ryan, Jonathan, and Anto are some of the coolest…

I must apologize for my lack of exciting blogging. Rather, for my lack of blogging in general. I've been working, helping with the editing of my video, creating a new Myspace layout for

On the train to Brussels...
I have to keep this short, because I am using Simon's laptop and this is the first time we have had internet since we have been in Europe and I'm sure he's itching to get back on here.
Paris was amazing! I took so many pictures that I will be posting once I get back home. We went to Versailles and climbed the Eiffel Tower, and avoided being pickpocketted on the Metro system (hooray for us). Right now we are on a train going 156 MPH, and apparently 1st class is 40 Euros cheaper than 2nd class if you are…

Model Behavior (Day Two)
Hey kitties,
After the Erin Wasson x RVCA show, I was trying to take the subway back, but all of the entrances had a metal gate blocking them. A tall, skinny girl was pacing in front of them muttering things and I recognized her wooden booties from the show. After a frustrated laugh about the subway, I asked her if she had just walked, to which she nodded. After a "Congratulations!" I started off for the stairs when she started talking about how she was minutely successful getting the fake tanner off and how backstage was a full-out party (no…

Fashion's Night Out (Day 1)
Hello emerald city inhabitants,
It has arrived -- Mercedes Benz Fashion Week has officially started in New York City. But instead of a busy night of shows, the gods at Vogue decided to declare tonight as "Fashion's Night Out".
The main idea was to keep all stores, all over the globe, open late for shoppers to start pushing through the recession. "Shop for good!" was the campaign's slogan annoyingly recited by all participants. I do love fashion, but let's face it -- getting a new pair of jeans isn't going to cure cancer or save polar bears.
Polar bears or…

The Backstory
Hello Crunchies,
And the madness ensues. Technically fashion week is supposed to start Friday, but some presentations are starting today. Before I embark on batting my eyelashes and unbuttoning my shirt in attempt to get into the shows, I should probably clarify what fashion week is.
For each season of the year, there is fashion week -- one for Spring/Summer, one for Fall/Winter and one for Couture Although the term "fashion week" can be misleading, there are actually multiple weeks per "fashion week" that happen one after the other -- the main ones being New York, London, Paris, and Milan.…

Last post until... Paris? Brussels? The airport?
Well, ladies and gentlemen, you will not be seeing me around here for a while, as I will be departing Seattle for Europe in approximately 14 hours and have decided not to bring my laptop. Backpacking with a lappy doesn't sound like such a fun time, and there are internet cafes everywhere in Europe, so I think I will survive! I'm going with my boo, Simon, and the tentative plan is to just bring a notebook and attempt to handwrite entries and then type them out at various cafes... buutttt I have no idea if that is going to work…

After All, Music Loves Fashion
Good afternoon, Seattle!
I'm reporting to you from the offices of a troubled magazine (bad ad sales... ain't in a bitch?) to kick off the fashion blogging at R.C.A. I'll be reporting to you about what New York Fashion Week for the Spring Summer 2010 season is like from the perspective of someone experiencing it for the first time.
Why would you want to hear about Fashion Week someone whose never been? Well I know you've all bummed out in front of the TV watching marathons of America's Next Top Model on VH1 or at least have seen The Devil…

I thought that compiling a bunch of music videos that I enjoy and sharing them with you all would be interesting, but it took me nearly a week to come up with.. uh.. four videos? After that I couldn't even decide how to post them, so instead of making a list of videos in order of their awesomeness, I am just going to throw them all at you in random order. Well, besides Sic Transit Gloria by Brand New. That video is just amazing-- So I guess that's where I will start.

Jessie's "BAND O' DA DAY"
My favorite band of the day is:
Danny the Champion Of The World.
With crazy Converge-esque guitar riffs and a hint of Mewithoutyou on the vocals (listen to God Oh God), this four piece is bound to turn heads. They have a video coming soon, it will be posted here on RCA when the time comes.
Go listen to them and show some love!

I've always liked NeverShoutNever (name is an alias for Christofer Ingle). It's not just his cute face, acoustic style, and attractive red hair. He's got talent. That's it. Watch his new video and tell US what you think. It's not like a regular booty-poppin, name droppin', artsy silly pants video... it's a video that entertains & makes you think.

Rest In Peace
We have a tragedy in our hands: The death of my trusty guitar. We've been in an on and off relationship for almost 2 years. Not that long, but not that short either. It was my longest relationship... (Haha...)
The story is simply that I treated it badly this last week. It's been tossed around during my video shoot (literally, in the air and down to the ground.) And today the lack of any tuning ability left in it aggravated me to the point of needing to throw it up in the air in my garage, allowing it…

Hi all. I've had a very long weekend shooting my music video for "Lover At Best." It sounds way official saying that, but in no means am I trying to be official sounding.
The video is being directed by

Battle of the Bands @ Starland Ballroom
As my hometown went to Warped Tour 2009 @ the Gorge, I spent my August 15, 2009, at the Starland Ballroom in Sayreville, New Jersey. This show was unlike any competition I've been to . This show was The Battle of the Bands, New Jersey edition.
The top 8 bands from all over New Jersey competed in this finale of the battle. My friend and I endured a long trek to Sayreville... a long traffic'd Garden State Parkway. If you know me, you know that one thing I hate with passion of 3 firey suns is traffic. Why? I can't…

What a weekend
I ended up not going to Warped Tour this year due to poor planning and various other reasons. My friend Chris sent me a picture of the sunset at the Gorge and I wanted to kill babies out of A) Furiousity and B) Sunsets make me want to kill babies on occasion, don't judge me though. I heard it was a good time and I'm jealous of everybody who got to go. However, I'm not upset that I missed whoever the hell "The Millionaires" are, I hear they are awful.
Anyway, Hunters had band practice Saturday and Ryan Kam and…

I'm sitting at the TP tent in Hillsboro, OR about an hour away from our second Warped Tour '09 set.
The Gorge was incredible yesterday. Since seeing John Mayer there in the summer of '07, I've wanted to be a part of the legacy that is performing at The Gorge. I sat behind the bassist on the main stage for 3Oh!3's set, and can only think of a hand full of things I have witnessed that were more spectacular. One of them being the sunset that preceeded their show.
This whole process was really intimidating at…

The ever so popular Seattle Tattoo Expo is this weekend. August 7-9th at the Seattle Center. I've never been but I'd imagine it to be fun. Who doesn't want to go get tattooed by some of the best artists in the country?
Who wants to get matching tattoos? Omgz. Or how about RCA tattoos. Let's all go get RCA tattoos!
Or not. But anyway, tattoo expo, this weekend, fun stuff. If you've been thinking about going to get a tattoo, this is your chance. There's going to be a ton of bands playing, so that alone is worth checking out.

In all honesty, when On The Last Day parted ways with Geoff, I was quite skeptical of their new find. Carson Allen is the current singer of On The Last Day and has a completely different sound than the old On The Last Day, but definitely good. The addition of Carson was a glorious thing. Secretly in my head, I've always thought Carson would sound awesome on top of something a little more poppy and 90's. Bands today are really into their cover songs...
I have come to the conclusion that lesser known bands only cover over-played pop songs to gain some sort of instant boost of MySpace fame, and it's getting more and more obvious by the AbsolutePunk news post. Admittedly, a few of them are not so bad (*cough* ADTR), but the rest are just ridiculous. I mean come on, you can't honestly think that all of these bands actually like covering cheesy pop songs-- but anything for a few more plays must be worth the agony. As one of our writers, Dan, speculated in the comments, "It's just one of many…

Hexxus promos... GREAT SUCCESS
What an adventure last weekend was. The guys in
Hexxus and I went out to the Edmonds waterfront to take some promos, and they ended up getting really, really messy in the process.
First we took some normal shots, which turned out the best:
Then came the sand/seaweed/Value Village jackets. I really wish we could have taken some more photos with this, but the sun was going down and the only place we could think of to take pictures was knee deep in the Puget Sound. Unfortunately, that didn't work…

With the recent addition of vocalist, Cory,

The world of mobility
I am finally up to date on the worlds techbological craze known as the "smart phone." All I can say is this shit is bananas. Matter of fact I am in my biology class right now posting a damn blog entry to rca. How sweet is that? Anyway its lab time, but I plan on writing more on the current world of technology in a matter of days. Much love.

It's Your Scene!
If you haven't already heard about it, some familiar faces in the Seattle local scene have recently started up an organization of sorts called "It's Your Scene" to help improve the local scene. As it's said in their blog, "IYS was started by a couple of musicians/music fans that are sick of seeing their local music scene continue to go down hill. From everywhere to the bands, fans, prices and everything else that "playing music" comes with these days. We feel that the real meaning of music is lost. The media and everything with it has ruined the art, meaning,…

Rain City Rendezvous
After driving about 13 straight hours from Modesto CA, TP is back home!
I haven't played a "home show" yet with the guys, so this should be cool. Seattle is like my second home. I've seen many shows at the (in)famous El Corazon, and am pretty stoked to finally play it!
This "Let's Make A Mess" tour has been amazing so far- great crowds with a lot of enthusiasm. It makes even mediocre nights of playing feel like a great show. So thanks to anyone who has come out so far, and I hope you Seatteleans can come this fine…
Sleep patterns will be the death of me
I don't understand how I can sleep for 3 hours a night, wake up, and not be able to sleep at all after that. It saddens me, it really does. Hopefully this will change soon! But at least it gives me plenty of spare time to post about it on here, right? Because I know you all are so interested in my sleep patterns, har har har.
Side note: Twilight sucks, anyone who slightly enjoys it should be ashamed. >=D
Anyway, I'm taking a class this summer, meaning no vacations, meaning I need to make a nice list of…

Summer + Working full-time = Computer negligence.
I didn't realize how easy it is to forget that I have a computer when I work full-time and the sun is always out. It's almost a chore to get on here and update sometimes, but blogging is easier than writing articles and my brain is too fried to come up with something even slightly intellectual anyway.
Anyway, I have a confession to make. Actually, there are two things that I need to get off my chest: one is that even though I have talked about how much I hate the new Alexisonfire songs that they posted on their

"Lets Make A Mess" Pre-Production
After arriving in Phoenix early yesterday morning and driving around David's hometown listening to the new Manchester Orchestra album (which is incredible), we picked up the rest of the guys from a delayed flight from Seattle and started pre-production.
For those playing at home, pre-pro is all the things we do in preparation for a tour: I.e. nailing down a set, and getting the stage show ready.
The first thing on the list was to get our brand new Snakes & Suits scrims up and constructed. Scrims are basically large banners put up on stage, usually with the bands name…

I've returned!
I haven't been able to update in a while, my bad. But I'm back in action here, and I've got some articles to finish up for you guys to get a load of. I just finished recording a Taylor Swift cover... Go ahead and laugh... I'm ashamed, but oh well. It's up on the
Hunters Myspace.
Along with the articles I'm doing, I'd be down to do opinion/answer type articles, so if you guys have any questions/need advice/any suggestions, holla at me here: jessie[at]raincityambience.com.
Oh and one more thing before I depart; Kelly and I have been…

Photos! Discovery Park is badass.
The photo portion of the site is not completely finished yet, so I am posting my photos on the blog instead. Hoorah.
This is the series I did for my ART 140 (basic photo) final project. My friend,
Tim Willis, suggested I go to
Discovery Park to take photos because my original idea failed miserably, so we went up on Tuesday night to explore. I'd say I am pretty proud of these...

Facebook. THE ARCHNEMESIS OF HUMAN INTERACTION.
I had a substantial amount written about how annoying it is when you see people you haven't talked to in a long time and they seem to know everything that is going on in your life because of Facebook, but then I realized that if I didn't want people to know anything about me then I wouldn't bother doing anything on the site at all. Both my Flickr and Twitter accounts are attached to my Facebook and I only befriend people I know, but damnit I feel like such a jerk when I don't know anything about some of the…

Hello RCA!
I've spent the last few days trying to figure out what I could say in my first blog since Kelly asked me to be involved with this project.
Verdict: I've got nothing.
But if Rain City Ambience is anything like all the college papers I wrote, then I can just BS my way to an A- or so. (In high school my English teacher called it "fluffing it up". I call it honest writing)
But the real reason for all of this is not to lecture you about how to go about your dissertations (if you have any. And if…
Champions League Final: Manchester United vs. Barcelona
Manchester United 0 - 2 Barcelona
If you are not a football (soccer) fan, at the very least you probably know of a team called Manchester United. If you answered "Yes, that is true." in your head then maybe you might have heard the name Cristiano Ronaldo as well, perhaps he is your favorite player. If you have no idea what I am talking about, do yourself a favor and look him up. I will return to him later...
Well yesterday the reigning Champions had their prize stripped from them in brutal fashion. Barcelona is now crowned the greatest football…

Folklife! Plus a weekend full of awesome.
There's really no place I would have rather been than at Sasquatch this weekend, but seeing as I couldn't convince myself to cough up the money until a week before the event (and I didn't want to request a press pass until the new site was up- at which point it was too late to even ask... though I did anyway and got denied), I was not able to attend. Fortunately for me, Memorial Day weekend is never dull in Seattle, and to replace the void that was created by the lack of Sasquatch-age, I went to Folklife (and Pike…

Anticipation is a...
I have been wanting to write about this since the second I got back from listening to the new Man Down Medic tracks yesterday afternoon, but I haven't been able to come up with the right words to describe how incredible everything is sounding so far. I guess 'incredible' would be a good word, but maybe I'm a little biased.
In case you don't know, Man Down Medic is a Seattle band made up of three siblings- Sam, Jacob, and Larissa- along with a keyboardist named Phillip and a drummer named Harrison. I booked their first show at KTUB almost…

The day has finally come...
It's been a good year and a half since design on the new site commenced (I wish I was exaggerating), and tonight is the night when we finally launch into a new era of Rain City Ambience. I would write something more thoughtful and reflective of the past four years of our existence, but my roommates are talking about dried blood and Desperate Housewives, which is making it a little hard to concentrate.
Basically, I can't believe we are still around. This started as something to do in web design class sophomore year of high school, and I never would…

A message to every band I have ever listened to. Namely Alexisonfire. Okay, only Alexisonfire.
Garrett reminded me that the new Alexisonfire CD is coming out next month, so I decided to head to their Myspace to check out Young Cardinals: the obviously kick-ass single that the band took three years to release.
Oh wait, did I say kick-ass? Screw that. I meant borderline Avenged Sevenfold bullshit that I wish I could pretend I didn't hear. But it's too late. My mind has been tainted. What has been heard cannot be unheard. I keep listening to the song expecting my ears (and broken heart) to magically adapt to this style that, as far as I…

Holy shit.
This is crazy. Im nervous to be writing this right now. Moving to the East Coast and going to school it has been easy for Garrett "RCA" Miller to die. I look forward to being born again and as well as this new chapter of Rain City Ambience. Thank you Kelly Mason, you guys know how great she is!

It's throwback music hour, baby.
I am currently listening to Taking Back Sunday's Tell All Your Friends from way back in 2002, and am attempting to come to terms with the fact that I think I like the music I used to listen to better than the music I listen to now. I don't know if it's because this is what got me into this genre of music in the first place or if it really is just better than my current musical choices (this would be a very sad realization), but I do know that it is blowing my mind to a point that…

Cavalier promos today
Jessie and I will be going out and taking promotional photographs (that sounds so official!) of
Cavalier today, so keep an eye out for those!
Actually, it sounds like Jessie is going to be calling the shots on this one, but maybe I will take pictures of buildings or squirrels or something while she is doing her thing. All I know is that I have not gotten the chance to officially break in my new camera, and this sounds like a perfect opportunity.
On that note, if you need promos then shoot me an email... I need to…
I am a raging angerdroid...
Or I could just say I am full of fury. This is all thanks to Kanye West being a (pardon my Bosnian) huge d-bag. Kelly and I have discussed the d-bagness of Mr. West quite a few times. And now our discussion has led to a full on article on why we believe he is a d-bag. Repetition is key here, kids. D-bag.
Go to the articles page now to read more on why I used the word d-bag so much.

The blog that started it all...
This all started back in 2005 as a side project for Garrett and I, and now look where we are. A little over three years and we are still around, but this time it's going to be a little bit different!
Less boring news and more personal blogs (which is my forte anyway... if there's something to have an opinion on you can bet your sweet ass I have something to say about it), but it's not just going to be me anymore. We are going to be adding more and more staff to our arsenal, and you may be…
